Open Innovation for cooperation

The skills in the field of cooperation as well as the resources available, often aren’t sufficient or adequate to address a correct selection of the several different technologies available nor to implement feasible solutions. In the intervention sectors from Cooperation and Development, the constraints are stricter than in other contexts and the recommendation of solutions should originate from a wider and participatory process rather than the traditional commercial market process. In this context, the project “Open Innovation for cooperation”, managed by Fondazione Politecnico di Milano and implemented in partnership with Polihub, Metid – Politecnico di Milano, Ingegneria Senza Frontiere – Milano, Tiresia and Associazione Gianluca Spina, aims to design and develop a platform of Open Innovation capable of promoting the co-creation of solutions, the reuse of already existing technologies, local development and implementation and, finally, the replicability of good practices. The project intends to facilitate the dialogue between the world of technology and the organisations working in the field of cooperation, in particular those operating in complex geographical areas, emphasising local needs and transferring them to a broader audience of potential subjects, also single individuals, who have developed insight of a possible solution or know an efficient one from prior experiences. The project, which started in April 2016, will be concluded in the end of September 2017.

Open Innovation for cooperation is one of the four projects funded by “Innovazione per lo Sviluppo”, a joint initiative promoted by Fondazione Cariplo, in collaboration with Compagnia di San Paolo and Fondazione CRT. The initiative has the following objectives:
  • foster the study of action models and pilot projects to test new technology solutions in the area of international cooperation and social innovation
  • foster the re-use and adaptation of already existing technology products and services in those countries that are targeted by the development initiatives of the Foundations
  • promote the use of data mining applied to social innovation and international cooperation, fostering a coalition between the actors of international development and the industry
  • promote a culture of innovation (represented by of digital fabrication labs and makers, start-ups, incubators and research centers) in the areas that are most relevant for the Foundations
In line with the above goals, the initiative develops around four thematic areas with four pilot projects: Digital Fabrication, Open Innovation, Data for social innovation and development, and training, information, scouting of local innovators.
