PoliCom (POLItecnico Comunicazioni Ottiche Milano) is a Centre of the Faculty of Electronics and Information at the Politecnico di Milano that operates with the Faculty's internal specialist staff and staff employed by the Fondazione Politecnico di Milano. Its mission is to consolidate, coordinate and promote the Faculty's skills and expertise in photonics.
PoliCom continues the work of CoreCom (an optical communications consortium of the Politecnico di Milano and Pirelli Cavi that ceased activities in 2008, 13 years after its foundation), and PoliCom has inherited its laboratories and part of its research staff from CoreCom. PoliCom is a landmark facility in Italy and internationally, with some of the best-equipped and most advanced laboratories in the sector, staffed by highly-qualified researchers.
-
The Optical Communications Systems Laboratory experiments with and develops new solutions in the field of "optical" transport and access;
-
The Integrated Optical Laboratory experiments with and builds new devices based on optical/integrated circuits;
-
The Fibre Optics and Optical Sensors Laboratory studies new optical fibres and their applications in the communications and measurement field;
-
The Optical and Electromagnetic Technologies Laboratory: studies and experiments with new materials and devices, both photonic and electromagnetic.
PoliCom aims to actively participate in the development of joint research initiatives with other universities, with CNR and, in general, with all the principal research agencies in Europe and worldwide.
