There is no doubt that the area of nanotechnologies, nanosciences and materials will represent one of the research areas of greatest strategic interest in the first decades of this century. Clear proof of this is the great attention that has been accorded to this sector in the European Union's VI Framework Programme.

The same level of attention is accorded in Italy: 5 of the 11 Centres of Excellence that were co-funded by MIUR in 2003 addressed the nanosciences, one of which, the Centre of Excellence for "Engineering of Materials and of Nano-structured Surfaces", was set up at the Politecnico di Milano. Within the Politecnico great attention is also focused on this area, with around 40 research groups active in the sector across several Faculties.
