The importance of environmental protection in its wider sense, including aspects linked to all factors of natural and anthropic origin, is now commonly accepted. An integral part of the many disciplines covered at the Politecnico di Milano, environmental protection at the Politecnico has evolved in line with the attention and importance accorded to this area by the EU and worldwide: from an initial approach that basically consisted of controlling processes and materials to limit the polluting emissions of factories and manufacturing, and countering the risks of major industrial accidents, we now no longer view the environment as a simple asset to be protected but rather as a strategic resource and as a driver for development.

In line with this change, expertise and resources have been channelled into intense research on many fronts and also into the development of experimental activities.
