For some time now the traditional disciplines of engineering and architecture have been integrated with design, as a practical technique that oversees planning and improvement of industrial products. It is no surprise that Milan is internationally recognised as a world capital of design.

In the structure of the system of laboratories in the areas of product and design, the evolution in product types that we are witnessing in this era of the information society forms a valid tool for research, experimentation, prototyping and representation.

Research into materials and technologies is predominantly conducted in the Faculties of Chemistry and Mechanics and in the Laboratory for Surface Characterisation of Fibres, at the Como campus. Prototyping activities are carried out in the Faculties of Industrial Design (INDACO) and Mechanics.
