Electronics, computers and telecommunications were behind the technological revolution of the late twentieth century, creating what is now known as the information society. The Politecnico di Milano has played a leading role, in Italy and internationally, in this technological revolution.
Since the first computer arrived in Italy after the Second World War, the pioneering research and farsightedness of Professor Luigi Dadda meant that research in the sector has developed and diversified, covering a wide spectrum of areas including electronic device technologies, signal processing systems, electromagnetism, data transmission, telecommunications networks, computer hardware architecture, software (algorithms, programming languages, databases), man-machine interaction, IT systems, artificial intelligence, and autonomous robotic systems.
Research covers both the technological aspects and the methodological aspects, and also the impact of applications on organisational structures. Research is conducted predominantly in the Faculty of Electronics and Information, but important contributions are also made in other faculties, particularly in the Faculty of Management Engineering and in the Faculty of Industrial Design, Arts, Communication and Fashion (INDACO). An essential part of the Politecnico's strategy of research and technological transfer in the sector is the CEFRIEL consortium, which work in research, innovation and training.
