MOTUS - MObility and Tourism in Urban Scenarios is a winning project in the 2015 industry development grant scheme conducted by the Ministry for Productive Activities. Participants include the Dipartimento di Elettronica e Informazione (Faculty of Electronics and Information) and the Ingegneria Gestionale del Politecnico di Milano (Faculty of Management Engineering), Universitą Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Milano, Universitą di Trento, CNR-Istituto di Scienza e Tecnologie dell'Informazione (Institute of Information Science and Technologies of the CNR - National Research Council), Universitą degli Studi di Pisa, Universitą Cą Foscari, Telecom Italia, Magneti Marelli and around a dozen SMEs.
MOTUS represents the first infomobility 2.0 experience, where a person is simultaneously a user and a source of services in favour of sustainability and eco-compatibility. The project aims to improve urban traffic conditions, especially for art heritage cities, which are providing the arena for experimentation. MOTUS is a service platform that is capable of gathering, aggregating and interpreting traffic in real time using information obtained from area infrastructures and from available devices (e.g. GSM, GPS, content made available by users, urban sensors etc.). It will be possible to check pedestrian and vehicle traffic in real time, offering services and suggesting alternative routes to avoid congested areas based on the current state of traffic in the city.
