The projects in this area, which are for the most part conducted in Italy, focus on: logistics and transport of goods, including hazardous goods; multi-modal systems for transporting goods by road and rail; sustainable mobility and satellite positioning; measurement of the inertia properties of motor vehicles.


EXAMPLES OF SIGNIFICANT PROJECTS:

EASyLOG
A project funded by a grant from FAR - Fondo Agevolazione Ricerca (Research Assistance Fund) that involved the Dipartimento di Ingegneria Gestionale (Faculty of Management Engineering), the Dipartimento di Elettronica e Informazione (Faculty of Electronics and Information), Poliedra C.A.T., METID, Siemens and a group of SMEs operating in the logistics sector. The project implemented a demonstrator for monitoring hazardous goods, using sensors located in the loading/transport units and a telematic infrastructure deployed at interports and at the yards of the various logistics operators (and also the emergency services). The system monitored the position, of course, but also the conditions (pressure, temperature and other parameters) of the substances being transported, managed the best location for the substances at interports, chose the routes depending on critical or sensitive areas to be avoided, and, in the event of an emergency, notified the emergency services of the details of the substance in question and the methods of handling it and treating it.

INPROP
Project funded by a INTERREG grant, involving the Dipartimento di Meccanica del Politecnico di Milano (Faculty of Mechanics of the Politecnico di Milano) and the University of Stuttgart. The project led to the development of a service for measuring the inertia properties of cars (coordinates of the barycentre and moments of principal inertia). Many auto makers, Italian and international, use it for experimental validation of design data.
