Physics Print version

For over forty years the Faculty of Physics at the Politecnico di Milano has carried out in-depth research in the field of applied physics, particularly in the physics of matter. This has mainly developed along two principal lines: lasers and photonics, and the physics of solids, surfaces and thin films.

Currently, the first line includes several different fields like laser sources for generating ultra-short impulses (femto- and atto-seconds, high-intensity radiation/matter interaction and ultra-short spectroscopy of materials), photonic systems for interdisciplinary applications (biomedicine, agrifood, cultural heritage), solid-state lasers and integrated optical devices (applications in telecommunications and environmental monitoring).

For the second line, the principal activities are the synthesis and characterisation of artificial, nano-structured materials (typically epitaxial layers of nano- and sub-nano-metric thickness) for applications in microelectronics, optoelectronics and spintronics, the study of the electronic and magnetic properties of solids, by means of innovative techniques using synchrotron radiation, the detection of cavities di nano- or sub-nano-metric dimensions in solids.
