MUSA, Milano’s ecosystem of innovation in urban regeneration

Transforming Milan’s metropolitan area into an ecosystem of innovation for urban regeneration.

The collaboration between the University of Milano-Bicocca, Politecnico di Milano, Bocconi University and the University of Milan bears the name MUSA (Multi-layered Urban Sustainability Action). Its purpose is to set the groundwork to develop smart solutions in renewable energy and waste management, study new green mobility models, create an incubation and acceleration hub for startups and optimise the use of big data applied to the health and wellbeing of its population.

This ambitious challenge has been taken up by four universities and, over the next three years, they will tap into the many partnerships with public and private entities. The project is backed by a total investment of 116 million euros, 110 million euros of which are financed through the Italian National Plan for Recovery and Resilience (PNRR).

The project includes six areas of intervention (technically called “spokes”), each coordinated by at least one university. Fondazione Politecnico di Milano, always closely attuned to the needs felt by companies, will manage two of the spokes with Politecnico di Milano. Alongside this supporting role in the path from “idea to company”, FPM’s resolve is that it can, through MUSA, inject value into the territory of Milan and Lombardy and so expand the ecosystem’s competitiveness, including to international contexts.
