The initiative
The Joint Research Lab’s primary ambition is to introduce a major innovation within the sphere of self-driving vehicles, that of a mixed-use urban circuit, involving a cabled and technologically advanced smart infrastructure that allows experimental vehicles to circulate in safety. Milan is putting itself forward as a hub for the technological development of self-driving electrical vehicles, creating new jobs and national interest within the sector. The idea is to create a test circuit within the city which is suitably equipped with future 5G network coverage, to be used for testing and certifying prototypes. The circuit could favour preferential lanes, railway staging areas and several of the city’s outskirts.

Technical details
The Joint Research Lab for autonomous and connected electrified urban mobility (JRL) is an ecosystem that brings together universities (Politecnico di Milano and Fondazione Politecnico di Milano acting as organisational secretary), industry, (ATM, Brembo, Enel X, IBM, Pirelli, Solaris Bus & Coach sp. z o.o, STMicroelectronics, Vodafone) and Institutions (Municipality of Milan and Chamber of commerce, Industry, Agriculture and Crafts – of Milan, Monza Brianza e Lodi); its scope covers self-driving vehicles, considered under several points of view, from public transport, like buses, to privately managed self-drive car-sharing schemes and the development of new projects and services that can enable this technology.
