The initiative

Socialhousenet came from the idea that best practise in a welcoming community can be the building block for a workshop based upon Design Thinking and service design tools. Teachers from Politecnico di Milano, in collaboration with Associazione Play Res, will be guiding the young people in the early stages of the workshop, which combines service design and game design. The young people tried out design-related tools and methods and game dynamics, giving free rein to their creativity, and working with the local area and hosting communities to design new initiatives and even businesses that can evolve over time into employment opportunities. This consolidated method uses a creative process to put young people into contact with communities and environment, while showing them how to make choices from the design phase to innovative business proposals, a highly sought-after skill in today’s world of work.

Technical details

A project for 18- to 35-year olds, with seven travelling workshops that started out from the “Associazione Mondo Comunità e Famiglia” (world, community and family association) of Villapizzone and visited five Italian regions (Lombardy, Piedmont, Lazio, Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna). Each workshop centred on one theme and specific objectives, which emerged from the needs in the local area and the hosting communities. The young people taking part in the workshops were able to enjoy a four-day life experience, as well as learning new things. Socialhousenet was financed by the Italian Prime Minister’s Office – Department for Youth and promoted by the Associazione Mondo Comunità e Famiglia, in collaboration with Politecnico di Milano – POLI.design, Fondazione Politecnico di Milano and Associazione Play Res.

Achieved results

The purpose of the initiative is to spread good practice that can create social innovation and transformation in the local territory, helping young people to develop skills and capabilities and co-designing new collaborative services with the communities hosting them. During the workshops, the youngers will be hosted by families in the local community, discovering a different, more open and supportive way of life. The participants presented their ideas on November 2018 in Milan, and several will be able to turn their creative concept into a tangible and sustainable project.
